Greener Kew

Two million whales, dolphins, seals, turtles and seabirds are killed every year by plastic. In the UK alone, we use around 15 billion plastic bags each year. We hope to show other villages and towns all over the country what they could do to change things if they get together.

Kew traders have got together with the Kew Society to help end the free plastic bag culture that has caused so much damage, particularly to the world's ocean life.

On July 1st, Kew will go plastic-bag-free. Over 50 local traders have pledged their support, and Kew Gardens is also participating.

The campaigners have sourced an ethically and ecologically sound cotton bag to offer shoppers. We have also found suitable plastic alternatives like cornstarch and paper and can provide information to anyone interested.

You can support your local traders in giving up plastic bags by bringing your own shopping bags or purchasing a Greener Kew bag. Made from organic cotton under the Fairtrade scheme, its a highly ethical choice. Available in Kew shops from 1 July.
